Materials either handle that or they do not.</p><h2 style="text-align:left;">Delamination kills more signs than anything else</h2><p style="text-align:left;">Heat cycling works on the bond between the aluminium skins and the core, day after day. A weak lamination line opens at the edges first, and once an edge lifts, the sign is done. Ask your supplier how the panel is bonded. Continuous lamination is the answer you want to hear. The logo stays sharp while the background dies around it. A coating rated for high UV exposure keeps brand colours honest for years instead of seasons.</p><h2 style="text-align:left;">Ripples show at 4pm</h2><p style="text-align:left;">Thin skins oil-can when hot, and afternoon light rakes across the fascia and shows every wave. Proper skin gauge plus the right thickness for the span, 3mm as standard and 4mm for the big fascias, keeps the face flat when it matters.</p><h2 style="text-align:left;">Metal moves. Design for it.</h2><p style="text-align:left;">A 3 metre fascia panel grows several millimetres between morning and afternoon. Fixings need room to let that happen, or the panel buckles and the sign does the work of telling everyone who cut corners.</p><p style="text-align:left;">And a small one that catches people out constantly: do not leave the protective film on through a summer. The printer gets all the attention while the surface under the ink decides whether the job survives.</p><h2 style="text-align:left;">Start with the surface, not the printer</h2><p style="text-align:left;">Standard polyester coated panels will accept UV ink, but adhesion varies from batch to batch, and you find out the hard way. A panel with a UV printable surface is treated for ink bonding at the factory. No primer, no adhesion promoter, no calls from the client six months later. Every batch.</h2><p style="text-align:left;">Print a small patch, let it cure properly, score a cross hatch into it and pull with tape. Takes half an hour. We have watched fabricators skip this step and lose a full weekend re-doing a storefront.</p><h2 style="text-align:left;">Flatness shows up in the print</h2><p style="text-align:left;">Fine text and large flat colour fields expose every ripple in a panel, especially reversed out white text on dark backgrounds. Check your sheets in raking light before printing, not after.</p><h2 style="text-align:left;">Printing then folding? Think about the sequence</h2><p style="text-align:left;">A rout and fold puts real stress on the ink right at the fold line. Keep critical graphics away from folds, or fold first and print after when the job allows it.</p><h2 style="text-align:left;">One last thing about outdoor work</h2><p style="text-align:left;">Your ink might be rated for years in the sun, but the coating underneath has to match it. But a panel engineered for wall cladding or interior fit-out behaves very differently on a CNC router, under a flatbed printer, or on a shopfront that faces direct sun twelve hours a day. Signage-grade ACP is built around three jobs, rout and fold cleanly, take print and vinyl perfectly, and stay flat and colour-true for years. Here is what to check before you order.</p><h2 style="text-align:left;">1. Thickness: 3mm or 4mm?</h2><p style="text-align:left;"><strong>3mm</strong> is the workhorse of sign making, light enough for letter trays, fascias and lightboxes, yet rigid enough to stay flat across a full sheet. <strong>4mm</strong> earns its place on larger fascia panels and freestanding elements where extra stiffness matters. A simple rule of thumb: if the panel spans more than about 1.5 metres unsupported, or sits high on a building where wind load is real, step up to 4mm.</p><h2 style="text-align:left;">2. Skin gauge matters more than you think</h2><p style="text-align:left;">Two 3mm sheets can behave completely differently if one uses 0.30mm aluminium skins and the other 0.12mm. Thicker skins fold with a cleaner radius, resist denting during handling and installation, and keep routed grooves crisp. Ask for the skin gauge in writing, it is the most common corner cut in cheap panels.</p><h2 style="text-align:left;">3. Match the surface to your finishing process</h2><ul style="text-align:left;"><li><strong>Polyester (PE) coating</strong>, the signage standard, with excellent adhesion for vinyl films and solvent or UV inks.</li><li><strong>UV-printable surfaces</strong>, pre-treated for direct flatbed printing with no primer and no adhesion failures.</li><li><strong>Brushed and mirror finishes</strong>, for premium fascias and letter faces where the metal itself is the design.</li></ul><p style="text-align:left;">Gloss maximises colour impact; matt hides fingerprints and cuts glare on wayfinding and interior signs.</p><h2 style="text-align:left;">4. Flatness and colour consistency</h2><p style="text-align:left;">A sign is judged in raking light, where every ripple shows. Look for panels produced with continuous lamination and tight batch colour control, and always order all panels for one job from the same batch, mixed batches are the classic cause of mismatched shopfronts.</p><h2 style="text-align:left;">5. Prove it on a sample first</h2><p style="text-align:left;">Before committing to a large order, rout and fold a sample: the groove should cut with clean shoulders and no chipping, and the fold should close to a neat, consistent radius without cracking the skin.
