Every week a sign maker asks us the same question: should this job go on ACP or acrylic? Both are good materials. They just solve different problems. After years of supplying sign shops across the UAE and the wider Gulf, here is how we actually answer that question.
The short answer
If the sign is a flat panel, a shop fascia, a wayfinding board or a printed display, ACP wins on cost, weight and outdoor life. If you need light to pass through the face, like a glowing lightbox front or a backlit letter, acrylic is the right call. Many of the best signs we see use both: an ACP tray with acrylic push-through letters.
Where ACP is stronger
- Price. A 3mm ACP sheet typically costs a fraction of cast acrylic at the same size. On a full shopfront, that difference pays for the installation.
- Weight. ACP is roughly half the weight of acrylic at similar rigidity. Your installers will feel it on every ladder climb, and your fixings carry less load.
- Sun and heat. Acrylic can bow and stress-crack in direct Gulf sun. A good signage ACP with a PVDF or polyester coating holds its colour and stays flat through 50 degree summers.
- Fabrication speed. ACP cuts clean on a CNC router, folds into trays with a simple V-groove, and takes UV print beautifully. No pre-drilling, no chip-prone edges.
- Rigidity per mm. A 3mm composite panel stays flatter over a wide span than 3mm acrylic, so large faces need less framing behind them.
Where acrylic is stronger
- Light transmission. This is the big one. ACP is opaque. If the whole face must glow, you need acrylic or polycarbonate.
- Glass-like finish. Polished acrylic edges and deep gloss faces suit premium retail counters and small illuminated logos.
- Thermoforming. Acrylic can be heat-formed into domes and curved letters. ACP folds, but it does not stretch.
Cost comparison in practice
Take a typical 3m x 1.5m shop fascia. In ACP you are looking at one 4mm sheet, routed and folded into a tray, printed or fitted with cut vinyl. In acrylic you would need a thicker sheet to stay flat at that size, plus a full aluminium frame behind it. On jobs like this our customers consistently report 40 to 60 percent savings by switching the body of the sign to ACP and keeping acrylic only where light must pass.
Durability in the Gulf
Outdoors, the two materials age very differently. Acrylic slowly yellows and gets brittle under intense UV. Signage-grade ACP uses coated aluminium skins, so the surface that faces the sun is paint on metal, not bare polymer. Our 3mm and 4mm signage panels are specified for exactly this climate.
