
Solid aluminium sounds like the premium choice for a sign. It is metal all the way through, so it must be better, right? Not usually. For most signage work, aluminium composite panel gives you the same metal face with less weight, less cost and much easier fabrication. Here is the honest breakdown from a factory that works with aluminium every day.
Weight: the difference you feel first
A 3mm solid aluminium sheet weighs around 8 kg per square metre. A 3mm ACP sheet weighs roughly 4 to 5 kg. On a large fascia that difference is measured in tens of kilograms. Lighter panels mean smaller fixings, lighter subframes, fewer installers on site and safer handling at height. Structures holding the sign can be simpler and cheaper too.
Flatness: where composite quietly wins
Here is something that surprises people. At the same thickness, ACP looks flatter than solid aluminium. Thin solid sheet shows every ripple from rolling and every wave from heat, an effect called oil canning. The sandwich construction of ACP resists it, so a big ACP face stays visually dead flat. On a glossy sign face in low sun, that is the difference between premium and cheap-looking.
Cost: usually 2 to 3 times apart
Solid aluminium sheet typically costs two to three times more than signage ACP of the same coverage, and fabrication adds more on top. Cutting thick solid sheet needs heavier tooling, folding needs a press brake, and edges need finishing. ACP cuts on any CNC router and folds by hand after a simple V-groove.
Fabrication side by side
- Cutting: ACP routs fast with clean edges. Solid aluminium needs slower feeds, lubrication and deburring.
- Folding: ACP folds into trays and returns with a V-groove. Solid sheet needs a press brake and skilled setup.

When solid aluminium is genuinely right
We are not here to talk you out of solid metal where it belongs. Choose solid aluminium for structural brackets and load-bearing parts, for signs that must survive regular impact, for very thin engraved plaques, and for anywhere a specifier demands a monolithic metal for code reasons. Those are real cases. They are also a small share of everyday sign work.
