We talk to sign makers every day, and we see the same buying mistakes repeat across workshops of every size. Each one costs real money, either upfront or a year later when a client calls about a failing sign. Here are the seven we see most, and how to avoid them.
1. Buying cladding-grade ACP for signage
Not all ACP is made for the same job. Facade panels are engineered for building envelopes, and general-purpose sheets can have faces that fight your printer and cores that fold badly. Signage-grade panels are specified for routing, folding and print adhesion. Buying by price alone often means buying the wrong grade.
2. Ignoring skin thickness
Two sheets can both say 3mm and behave completely differently, because what matters is the aluminium skin on each face. Thin skins dent during handling and telegraph every touch. Ask for the skin thickness in writing before you order. It is the single best predictor of how the sheet will handle.
3. Choosing thickness by habit
A 3mm sheet is perfect for printed panels and wayfinding. A large fascia catching wind wants 4mm. Using 3mm everywhere saves a little on material and pays it back in bowed faces. Using 4mm everywhere wastes money on jobs 3mm handles fine. Match the sheet to the span. Our 3mm and 4mm pages spell out where each belongs.
4. Forgetting the climate
A coating that survives a European winter is not automatically rated for a Gulf summer. UV intensity and 50 degree surface temperatures fade cheap coatings fast. Ask what the face coating is and what exposure it is rated for. Your client will be looking at the answer for years.
5. Not checking sheet size against the router bed
Buying sheets that do not match your machine bed or your standard sign sizes creates waste on every single job. Sometimes a different standard size, or a custom size from the factory, drops your offcut rate dramatically. This is a five-minute conversation with your supplier that pays for itself forever.
6. Peeling the protective film too early, or too late
Leave the film on through cutting, folding and installation, then peel it promptly. Film left baking on a face in the sun for weeks can leave adhesive ghosting. Peeling before fabrication invites scratches. Simple rule, commonly broken.
7. Treating every supplier as interchangeable
Consistency is the quiet quality. The tenth sheet should fold, print and colour-match exactly like the first. That comes from consistent coil, core and coating sources, which is a manufacturing discipline, not a trading one. It is also why we manufacture in the UAE rather than reselling mixed stock.
The checklist
- Signage grade, confirmed in writing
- Skin thickness stated
- Thickness matched to span
- Coating rated for Gulf exposure
- Sheet size matched to your bed
- Film handled correctly
- A supplier who answers technical questions
