Matte vs Gloss ACP: Which Finish for Your Sign?

Matte vs gloss ACP finish

Matte or gloss? It sounds like a small detail, but the finish you pick changes how a sign reads, how it photographs, how it ages and even how often it needs cleaning. Sign makers ask us this constantly, so here is the practical guide we give over the phone, written down.

What gloss does well

  • Colour pop. Gloss faces make reds redder and blacks deeper. Brand colours look saturated and alive.
  • A retail feel. Shopfronts, food outlets and showrooms usually want that polished, lit-up energy.
  • Night lighting. Under spotlights and LED wash, gloss faces reflect and sparkle.

What gloss punishes

Reflection cuts both ways. A glossy face in direct sun can throw glare that makes the sign hard to read at certain angles. Gloss also shows every fingerprint, every dust film and every tiny wave in the substrate. If the panel behind it is not perfectly flat, gloss will tell everyone. This is one reason flatness matters so much in composite panels.

What matte does well

  • Readability. No glare means the message stays legible in harsh sun, which is most of the day here.
  • A premium, architectural look. Matte reads calm and expensive. It suits corporate, hospitality and wayfinding work.
  • Forgiveness. Dust, light scratches and small surface flaws hide better on matte faces. In a dusty climate, that means the sign looks freshly cleaned longer.

What matte gives up

Colours sit a little quieter on matte. If a brand lives on high-energy colour, matte can feel muted next to the gloss version. Matte also diffuses light, so under night spotlighting it glows softly rather than shining.

How we advise choosing

  • Retail fascia with strong brand colours: gloss
  • Wayfinding and information signage: matte, always. Readability first.
  • Corporate and office buildings: matte for the architecture, gloss for the logo if needed
  • Dusty or hard-to-access locations: matte, it hides the wait between cleanings
  • Printed graphics: matte faces reduce glare on the print too. Our UV printable ACP takes ink well either way.

Do not forget the metal finishes

Sometimes the answer is neither paint finish. A brushed aluminium face gives texture and depth that flat colour cannot, and a mirror face turns letters and logos into jewellery. We see fabricators mix these with matte body panels to great effect.
